About University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth is a new breed of university. We’re committed to helping every student, whatever their background, achieve their absolute best.

Young and ambitious, we are respected for:

  •  the quality of our teaching, learning and student outcomes
  • the all-round excellent student experience we offer
  • the extensive support we provide, from wellbeing to academic skills
  • our commitment to boosting student employability

We’re proud of our 5 star rating for excellence in the QS World University Rankings 2022 and our global top 150 ranking in the Times Higher Education Young Universities 2021. In 2023, we were delighted to achieve the highest possible Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment. This means we are officially recognised as one of the UK’s best universities for teaching. We are rated Gold because we provide a world-class education, and an outstanding and supportive student experience.

We’re even prouder of our graduates’ success. With the support of our highly rated Careers and Employability Service , 94 per cent of our students are in work or further study 15 months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2019/20).

We've also launched a unique approach to placements called Connected Degrees. This is a 3 year course with a 4th year paid placement and courses offer the freedom to choose when you take your placement: either before or after your final year. Portsmouth is the only UK university that offers flexible sandwich placements for undergraduates.

Our research has a global impact. 77 per cent was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the most recent research assessment exercise (REF 2021), which makes Portsmouth a top 3 modern university for research power.

Researchers at Portsmouth work closely with business, industry and the public sector to solve society’s problems – from engineering enzymes for a revolution in plastics recycling, to exploring how virtual reality can help in crime prevention and criminal rehabilitation.

Tackling the climate emergency is a priority for us – and not just through research. We have committed to becoming climate positive by 2030. This means going beyond net zero by saving more carbon than we emit. It’s one of the most ambitious targets of any UK university.

There are 5 faculties at the University of Portsmouth:

  •  Faculty of Business and Law
  • Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries
  • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Science and Health
  • Faculty of Technology

We welcome thousands of international students to join our inclusive community.

Our city centre campus is at the heart of a lively city by the sea, on England’s sunny south coast.
