About University of Portsmouth
The University of Portsmouth is a new breed of university. We’re committed to helping every student, whatever their background, achieve their absolute best.
Young and ambitious, we are respected for:
We’re proud of our 5 star rating for excellence in the QS World University Rankings 2022 and our global top 150 ranking in the Times Higher Education Young Universities 2021. In 2023, we were delighted to achieve the highest possible Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment. This means we are officially recognised as one of the UK’s best universities for teaching. We are rated Gold because we provide a world-class education, and an outstanding and supportive student experience.
We’re even prouder of our graduates’ success. With the support of our highly rated Careers and Employability Service , 94 per cent of our students are in work or further study 15 months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2019/20).
We've also launched a unique approach to placements called Connected Degrees. This is a 3 year course with a 4th year paid placement and courses offer the freedom to choose when you take your placement: either before or after your final year. Portsmouth is the only UK university that offers flexible sandwich placements for undergraduates.
Our research has a global impact. 77 per cent was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the most recent research assessment exercise (REF 2021), which makes Portsmouth a top 3 modern university for research power.
Researchers at Portsmouth work closely with business, industry and the public sector to solve society’s problems – from engineering enzymes for a revolution in plastics recycling, to exploring how virtual reality can help in crime prevention and criminal rehabilitation.
Tackling the climate emergency is a priority for us – and not just through research. We have committed to becoming climate positive by 2030. This means going beyond net zero by saving more carbon than we emit. It’s one of the most ambitious targets of any UK university.
There are 5 faculties at the University of Portsmouth:
We welcome thousands of international students to join our inclusive community.
Our city centre campus is at the heart of a lively city by the sea, on England’s sunny south coast.

Student life
City and seafront
Portsmouth is pretty beaches and vivid street art, rich in naval history and buzzing with indie start-ups, alive with possibility.
The UK’s only island city is flat, compact and easy to get around on foot, on a bike, or by renting a public hire e-scooter.
With the University campus woven through the city centre, shopping, cafes and nightlife are on your doorstep. And you can walk to the seafront or historic Old Portsmouth in minutes.
Here are some of the highlights that make student life in Portsmouth great:
Students’ Union
The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union offers a wealth of opportunities to enrich your time at Uni, gain new experiences, and access support and advice as you need it.
The Union is an important voice for students. It’s also a place where you can find new friends and develop new skills.
There’s a huge range of clubs and societies to join, from the Activists Students Group to the Zimbabweans Society.
You can develop talents and share experiences with people who share your passions – whether they’re for astronomy, gaming, music, pro wrestling or almost anything else.
And if your interests aren’t represented yet? You can be the one to change that.
Sport
Whether you want to play, train or compete, Portsmouth is a university where you can reach your personal best.
There are more than 35 sports clubs at Portsmouth, covering everything from American Football to Women’s Rugby. You can choose to play socially with friends, train with a team to improve your skills, or represent the University in competition.
The brand new Ravelin Sports Centre is one of the UK’s most sustainable sports centres, with the latest fitness tech and affordable memberships. Its features include:

Totally committed to helping you develop skills employers value, Portsmouth is the place to get yourself career-ready.
Our graduate employment rates are among the UK’s best, with 94 per cent of our students in work or further study 15 months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2019/20).
Courses created for the working world
We’ve designed our courses to give you a range of transferable skills – from communication to teamwork to time management. You’ll be able to show employers how you’re ready to be a valued member of their team from day one.
How can we be sure you’ll learn the right skills? Because we have strong links with employers in a wide range of different fields. What’s more, many lecturers and researchers at Portsmouth are actively involved in work with business and industry.
Many courses are accredited, approved or recognised by Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs), certifying that you've got specialist knowledge and skills needed for those professions.
We’ve created simulated working environments and purchased specialist professional equipment, so you can develop and hone expert skills. Depending on your course, this could mean anything from experiencing working practices in a busy newsroom, to carrying out restorative dentistry.
Regular visits from employers, many of which run career-specific seminars, will give you a head start on your job hunt and enable you to start building a professional network.
We also offer a range of courses you can study while working, including degree apprenticeships, continuous professional development and learning at work degrees.
Placement opportunities
A placement year degree (also known as a sandwich degree) gives you a real, paid taste of working life between your penultimate and final year. It’s an option on many of our courses.
There are great reasons why you should consider a placement year: apply skills you learn on your course
Lots of our students are hired by their placement employer after graduation. Others choose to become self-employed and start their own business, with support from the University.
Support for your career
Our highly regarded Careers and Employability Service is free to access from the moment you register with Portsmouth, to five years after you graduate.
The experts in the Service offer a variety of workshops, online resources, and one-to-one appointments. They can help you with every aspect of job seeking and career building, including:
If you’re an entrepreneur and want to go into business for yourself, our Student StartUp team can support you in developing and growing your new venture.
