Wits’ commitment to social justice has meant it’s played a key role during historical moments in South Africa, with many Witwatersrand alumni becoming icons, both historically and today.

Wits academics regularly publish world-leading research in the fields of natural science, medical and health science, social science, humanities and engineering. In fact, Wits is home to 381 NRF-rated researchers and 400 award-winning researchers, who regularly contribute new research in their fields and have a direct impact on policy and industry.

Wits has partnerships with institutions around the world including research funding opportunities for staff and students. Wits prides itself on being very cosmopolitan, with 10 percent of its students coming from overseas and 85 nationalities represented on campus from Africa and the rest of the world. The Wits Language School offers English training to students who wish to improve their language skills, while Wits’ International Office supports international students throughout all stages of the study cycle - from study visas to finding a medical aid service provider.

University information

Wits students enjoy state-of-the-art academic and recreational facilities, including 11 libraries with computer labs, knowledge hubs and an award winning disability unit for students with physical, medical, learning or psychological conditions to realise themselves in spite of their disabilities. 

Science enthusiasts can pay a visit to the Planetarium, the Origins Centre, the Bleloch Geological Museum, the Life Sciences Museum and the James Kitching Gallery in the Palaeosciences Centre.

Together with the finest talent from across the African Continent, the Wits Theatre Complex continuously explores new and experimental work. With all this experimental work being done at the University, audiences will also be enthralled by the Fassler Gallery, the Anthropology Museum including the Wits Art Museum.

Wits International Office - The Wits International Office (WIO) offers advice on matters concerning visas as well as student permits.

Postgraduate funding is available and awarded on the basis of academic merit, including the postgraduate merit award, a scholarship given to deserving postgraduate students by the university in exchange for up to nine hours spent working for your department each week, and the National Research Foundation (NRF), which is awarded by the South African government to exceptional projects in the natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities.

Entry requirements at postgraduate level include an upper second class bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. At PhD level, you will need a good master’s degree and to have approached a supervisor from the relevant faculty.  Find more details on how to apply here.
