There are two different concentrations for Music Education majors: Choral and Instrumental: Music education majors specializing in choral education learn pedagogical skills such as diction, managing choral performance groups, conducting, vocal auditions, and program building; Instrumental music education majors specialize in one instrumental family: brass, percussion, strings, or woodwind instruments. The Music Department offers courses that teach the psychology and principles of music teaching to children, including history, philosophy, types of school programs, and organization of instruction. Students develop reading and writing skills by reviewing current practices in music education pedagogy and performance such as teacher observations, trade journals, online resources, and conference publications.
