Employer Reputation Indicative of a Good Student City?

Employer reputation can more easily be defined as employers in a city who identify at least one university in the city which produces excellent graduates. It is further divided into international and domestic.

Enough of the technical jargon. As an international student and studying at University of Edinburgh and then LSE I thought I would be snapped up by employers both domestic and international, leaving me with plenty of choice. This was also a great contributing factor for my desire to study at these institutions (along with the slightly more important aspect of them accepting me).

Upon graduation from LSE I was waiting for the job offers to start flowing in. One, two, three months down the line and I was brought back to reality, I was not the only one graduating from LSE, there were thousand others. At job interviews people went ‘oh wow’ that is an impressive education, yet there was stiff competition which made me up my game.

Companies have campus recruitment at universities they believe produce the best graduates. I went along for one, had a sudden urge to make pots of money, go into banking from an English Literature background and asked a representative from Deutsche bank what it takes to make this drastic move.

I heard a few inspirational stories of people changing from humanities streams, working in MacDonalds and then decided against having to take the Jubilee line every day to Canary Wharf. I definitely feel when choosing a university, this factor plays a fairly large role, given the competition and calibre of graduates these days, along with the economic climate.
