Students pursuing a degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics gain experience in mathematical modeling, applied analysis, the development and analysis of numerical algorithms, and the use of mathematical software. Courses include Computational Methods for Differential Equations, Complex Analysis, Parallel Scientific Computing, Programming Concepts, to name a few. In addition to an in-depth mathematics curriculum, students have opportunities to incorporate a minor or area of special interest to delve into another discipline; from Biochemistry to Electrical Engineering to Physics. Substantial focus is placed on the development of practical applications and techniques to enhance the competitiveness of our students to a wide range of employment opportunities including careers in computer programming, systems analytics, finance, national laboratories, academia, and in industry. In addition to contributing toward achieving the educational objectives described in the CSM Graduate Profile and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology's (ABET) accreditation criteria, the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Program at CSM has established the following program educational objectives: Students will demonstrate technical expertise within mathematics and statistics by: Designing and implementing solutions to practical problems in science and engineering; and, Using appropriate technology as a tool to solve problems in mathematics. Students will demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge within mathematics by: Extending course material to solve original problems, Applying knowledge of mathematics to the solution of problems, Identifying, formulating and solving mathematics problems, and Analyzing and interpreting statistical data. Freshmen are encouraged to have a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) (a B or better where A=4.0) from a secondary school. Other English language requirements: Mines require a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL paper-based test; Pearson Test of English/PTE Academic: Minimum overall score of 53 with no communicative skills score below 50. Test must have been taken within the past two years to be accepted.
