Mining university is unique – its training programs cover complete mining production string starting from geological prospecting to metallurgy. Our university combines fundamental engineering education and modern technological vision including the fields of automation and information technology. Our goal is to enter the number of leading Russian scientific educational centers of world class on the basis of integration with scientific organizations and profound cooperation with manufacturing enterprises.

The Ural state mining university – the first higher educational institution of the Urals – was established on July 3, 1914 by the Act approved by the Emperor Nicholas II. This event was a new milestone in the history of the Urals. The Urals is not only geographical but also the historical center of the mining industry in Russia. Thanks to this higher engineering school new cities came into being and grew, factories and plants were built, industry started to be developed. More than one hundred thousand specialists in engineering – university graduates – have been working for the benefit of the Ural region, the great Russia and the whole world.

The Mining university community honors its traditions. The Coat of Arms and the Flag of the university are listed in the State Register; a special uniform is introduced for students and the teaching staff. By the decision of the university Academic Council, the hymn of the university was approved.

The Ural Geological Museum is the pride of the university. Being created in 1937, it is still a training base for students of the Mining university and other educational institutions. The fame of the Museum has long stepped beyond the Urals. This unique treasure house of mineral resources is well known both all over Russia and abroad. Heads of many states visited the museum, among them: leader of the People’s Republic of China Mao Zedong, the Indian Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, President of Vietnam Ho Chi Minh, President of Indonesia Sukarno, President of Czechoslovakia Antonin Novotny, President of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito and heads of other countries. More than 45 thousand exhibits are on display whereas the collection fund totals over half a million items.

The university students actively participate in extra-curricular activities: there are 14 sports clubs and 10 creative groups at the university. The university has a lot to be proud of: our men’s hockey team is a two-time champion of the Students League (2017, 2018); the university student Sakhavat Gadzhiev won the all-Russia Judo Championship two times; whereas the all-university chess team is a tenfold all-Russia champion. It won the Sverdlovsk Regional Chess Championships 25 times.

Special attention is paid to patriotic and spiritual-moral education of young people. University’s Saint Nicholas home Cathedral was reconstructed; the students centre of patriotic education «Svyatogor» is functioning at the university. Volunteers from students trade union committee give ecological classes to schoolchildren, participate in volunteer clean-up, offer help to veterans and inmates of children’s homes.
