The BSc Biomedical Sciences degree allows students to explore the progression and treatment of human diseases through the study of how cells, organs and systems function in the human body. Throughout the degree a particular focus is placed on age-related diseases. Students will also explore the different treatments methods and lifestyle considerations used to aid healthy living and aging. Further still, students will gain the laboratory skills required for the identification and treatment of human disease. Students will explore the delivery, partitioning, metabolism and elimination of drugs in the context of both their clinical use and drug design. Students will also be able to investigate how nutrition will impact human health as well as the development and application of experimental approaches used to assess gene function through genome sequencing and mapping. From these analyses, information will inform new predictive strategies, identifying new and useful genes and potential drug targets; understanding of gene behaviour, and the development of novel therapeutic products will also be provided. On this degree students will enhance their future prospects with the integrated year in industry, which can lead to careers in the fields of teaching, clinical and community healthcare, clinical genetics, forensic laboratory analysis or diagnostic pathology. Careers in the clinical trials and regulatory sector, National Health Service or research and development for the pharmaceutical, diagnostics, medical devices/laboratory instrumentation industries will also be available.

This course is also available with an integrated year in industry.
