This program is designed for students who either plan to enter the human services field upon graduating from CMU, or attend graduate school for advanced education. The program prepares students for careers dealing with adolescent pregnancy prevention, teen parenting, family finance, family life education, families and youth at-risk, and other family-related services. With appropriate graduate education, potential career options include: marriage and family therapy, sexual therapy, family research and/or college instruction. Students who take this major cannot minor in Family Studies or double major in Child Development. Students may only double count 9 credits when combining the Family Studies Major with the Child Development Minor. The Family Studies program equips students with the skills to educate and support families in a variety of human service related fields. Training in theory and research is connected to professional practice so that students are able to enter human service careers at the Bachelor level. All Family Studies majors are eligible to apply for Certified Family Life Educator status from the National Council on Family Relations upon completion of their degree. Many students continue with their education to earn a counseling related licensure.
