This program is an interdepartmental major grounded in the disciplines concerned with the practice of public relations. Students are strongly encouraged to work closely with their academic advisor throughout their academic careers. The highlights of the major include: an opportunity to create a program of study reflecting the student's career goals: a comprehensive core containing coursework from broadcast and cinematic arts; journalism, and communication and dramatic arts; a complimentary range of course work from areas such as business, sociology, management, philosophy, entrepreneurship and political science; a 6-hour public relations internship; and the option to minor in an additional area of study to further enhance the student's career goals. In this program, students will learn skills such as: effective written communication, persuasive speaking and presentations, computers, production, research and information gathering, editing, layout and design, problem solving, decision making, conceptualizing, networking, time management, and strategic planning. This is an exciting profession and provides graduates with opportunities to work in a variety of jobs such as: agency, corporate, nonprofit, health care, government, lobbying, education, fundraising, tourism, community relations, special events planning, high-tech, and sports.
