The group use a wide variety of techniques to understand the form, function, evolution and ecology of higher plants. Research interests include the molecular biology of development (Tague), the biochemistry and physiology of growth (Muday), physiological ecology (Smith), molecular systematic (Kroc), and population and community ecology (Silman). Interest in higher plants unifies the group and generates extensive and productive interactions among faculty and students. IPB research offers the opportunity for both laboratory based research and field research at temperate and tropical field sites. The breadth in faculty interests and laboratory facilities affords students excellent opportunities to answer questions which cross the boundaries between traditional disciplines in plant biology. A graduate seminar course is offered each semester by members of the group. These seminars explore advanced and emerging topics in various fields of plant biology and help students understand the design of experiments and the interpretation of results.
