The PhD in History programme aims to train students to become research-oriented scholars and prepare them for their academic career in the future. Upon completion of this programme, students should be able to: Recognize, understand, and apply the basic theories, research methods and frontier issues in the studies of history, and to be well trained in three areas – the history of China, the history of Sino-Western communication and the history of Macao; Demonstrate critical thinking and communication skills, apply and evaluate the principles and skills of academic writing, and develop a solid foundation in the areas of academic analysis, writing, and communication; and Demonstrate academic ethics, to develop an independent path in both the research and writing of the thesis, demonstrating a significant and original contribution to the field of study, and to author academic work of the highest standards, thus constructing a solid foundation for a future academic career.

  • General Entry (for Master’s Degree Holders): Possess a Master’s degree or academic background recognized as equivalent by the University of Macau.
  • Accelerated Entry (for UM Master Students): Have been registered in a Master’s Programme at the University of Macau for at least one year. Have successfully finished the coursework part with outstanding performance and have demonstrated strong research ability.
  • Direct Entry (for Bachelor’s Degree Holders): Possess a Bachelor’s degree with outstanding performance and have demonstrated strong research ability
  • College English Test (CET) score is acceptable to some academic units, please visit corresponding website of each academic unit for details.
