This program uses a humanities and social science lens to examine intersecting threats to social, ecological, political, economic, and health systems. It is the only program in Australia that integrates biological and cultural anthropology to address planetary-scale challenges while foregrounding anthropology’s ethnographic method, prioritising grounded, people-focused perspectives.

The Master of Anthropology and Planetary Futures (Advanced) equips students with theories, case studies, and tools for social engagement to understand global crises, their cultural histories, and strategies for a better future. The program fosters critical social thought and research. Moving beyond crisis narratives to analyse the political and social work that these threats justify, students develop evidence bases for advocacy and public debate, understanding how planetary emergencies arise from human social engineering and cultural values while recognising the creative responses of affected communities.
