When choosing a university, there are a few common things everyone thinks about: university rankings, location, finding a campus where you can picture yourself. While these considerations matter, there’s another often-overlooked factor that matters too: sustainability.  

Beyond asking, ‘Is this university in the global top 100?’, it’s worth asking ‘What is this university doing about the future I’m going to graduate into?’ and ‘How seriously does this university take its responsibility to students, communities and the planet?’

A key indicator of a university set up for an environmentally focused future is its surrounding community. You should consider whether the local area is prepared to support sustainable infrastructure and initiatives.

Professor Sean Connell and Dr Dominic McAfee are restoring lost oyster reefs with underwater music.  

Professor Shizhang Qiao and his team are advancing renewable energy through work in catalysis and aqueous batteries.  

Waite Research Institute has teamed up with the beloved Coopers Brewery to make beer production better for the environment.  

Dr Kate Delaporte is helping future-proof Adelaide’s urban forest by working with government to assess how climate change and biosecurity threats will affect more than 600,000 trees. 

Research projects like these are possible because Adelaide University is home to the Environment Institute and the Waite Research Institute, as well as several environment-dedicated research centres.  

This research network contributes to a broader innovation environment. The university’s ThincLab and Enterprise Hub point to a culture where students with ideas can find mentoring, industry connections and space to explore what those ideas – environment-driven or otherwise – could become. It also links with places such as Adelaide BioMed City and Lot Fourteen, putting students near major research, health, technology and start-up ecosystems. 

How to get involved with sustainability as a student

As well as through your learning, there are other ways for students to get involved in sustainability initiatives. One example is attending events by the Network for Emerging Sustainability Thinkers (NEST) at the Environment Institute. Made up of  higher-degree and early-career researchers from across Adelaide University, the network hosts events such as the Fleurieu Peninsula Planting Day, where volunteers help plant over 300 plants in Adelaide's surrounding regions.  

These kinds of opportunities can be valuable. They help you meet people, build career-ready skills and turn “I care about sustainability” into something more specific: a project, a portfolio, a network or even a career path.
