About Almaty Technological University

Almaty Technological University (ATU) is located in Almaty, the business and cultural center of Kazakhstan. ATU is one of the leading higher educational institutions in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. It has been training specialists and scientific personnel in the food, processing, textile and light, engineering and IT, business, service and hospitality industries for 65 years.   

In terms of its faculty, ATU has 463 scientists and teachers, including 28 academicians and corresponding members of international and national academies of sciences, 51 doctors of science and professors, 134 candidates of science and associate professors and 60 doctors of PhD.  

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest metropolis, with the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains on its doorstep. It was the country's capital city until 1997 and remains Kazakhstan's trading and cultural hub. The university sits in the centre of Almaty, on the corner of Tole bi and Ahmet Baytursynov streets.  

ATU consistently implements the principles of the Bologna Declaration and in 2010 it was honoured to sign the Magna Charta Universitatum (the Great Charter of Universities). From April 2014, Almaty Technological University has been registered as an individual associate member of the European University Association (EAU).

University information

Find information about applying to ATU on their website, including a virtual dean’s office and admissions committee. A basic overview of the undergraduate application process involves first choosing a programme, looking at the exam schedule, making sure your legal documents are in order, participating in online admissions consultations and finally applying for grants. For international students, see the further documentation required and study visa information on their website. For international students, the tuition fees start from 600,000 tenge KZT ($1400).  

Students have the possibility to receive a personal rector’s scholarship for study which covers the tuition fees. ATU’s Alumni Association also established the ATU Endowment Fund, which accumulates financial resources from graduates, business partners and friends of the university and directs investment income to support talented youth, research, socially vulnerable students and beyond.    

ATU aims for students to improve their theoretical knowledge plus conduct scientific research in practical classes. The university has its own techno park, ATU Inn (educational hotel complex) and research centres. Students can choose from three different languages for study including Kazakh, Russian and English.

Student life

The mission of ATU is to educate competitive, intellectual, moral and highly developed specialists suitable for specialised branches of industries. ATU is an active participant in the process of internationalisation of scientific and educational programmes, providing students with overseas summer internships and training opportunities. ATU students have a unique opportunity to undergo the summer professional practice in partner universities in Spain, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, South Korea and in other countries.  
Immigration and visa support for students is provided. Students of more than 10 nationalities study at ATU, and international students from countries such as Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan make up 2.1% of students at the university.     All students are given the opportunity to stay in university dormitories and free Wi-Fi is provided. Cultural events and sports games are traditionally held among students. Plus, student clubs of various directions and interests are open to all students at the university. The most popular involve trips around Almaty, playing instruments and more. ATU also organises clubs to support the well-being of international students. 

In the 2020-21 academic year, ATU had 1,595 graduates, of which 963 graduates were employed within six months – a rate of 62%. Since 2013, ATU’s career centre has aimed at providing services to students and graduates in employment and career development.   
ATU’s departments maintain close contact with leading enterprises and organisations. In fact, a selection of graduates are employed by organisations from their internships at their facilities. ATU also has an Alumni Association, created to consolidate the efforts of graduates to increase the social significance and recognition of the university.
