Degree

BS

Study Level

Undergraduate

In addition to the common core mathematics coursework expected of all mathematical sciences majors, students earning a Bachelor of Science must complete: the second semester or higher of a modern language, PHYS 1220 Physics with Calculus I, a two-semester sequence in a natural science with labs, MATH 4000 Theory of Probability, MATH 4400 Linear Programming, MATH 4540 Advanced Calculus II, an emphasis area or concentration, as described below. Students are encouraged to select an emphasis area no later than spring semester of their sophomore year. Until an emphasis area is declared, students are considered "Undeclared" and are assigned to general academic advisers within the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The Undergraduate Announcements are the final word in degree requirements, but we provide course flowcharts for planning purposes. Some emphasis areas require specific course selections for general education requirements, so students who are considering a particular emphasis area may wish to consult the course flowchart for that area even before they declare the emphasis. Students may change emphasis areas partway through the degree, but should be aware that doing so might increase time to degree, depending on how much area-specific coursework remains to be completed.
