Microbiologists study microorganisms and viruses. Among other things, immunologists want to know how larger organisms (such as humans) respond to foreign objects, many of which are very small. These two disciplines are thus inextricably linked. Studying them together means you’ll be widely prepared for future career opportunities.
If you thrive in a smaller campus environment, consider doing the first year of your degree on our Truro campus. After completing your first year, you will move to the Halifax campus to complete the final three years of your degree.
When you study Microbiology and Immunology at Dalhousie, you’ll study microscopic organisms and how they can impact our lives. You’ll learn how viruses, bacteria and parasites can cause disease, and how our bodies protect themselves. You’ll learn from faculty who are experts and active researchers in infectious diseases, cancer biology, inflammation and host-pathogen interactions.
First-year students begin by taking foundation courses in science. These courses will give you the background for more in-depth studies in topics such as bacteriology, virology, immunology, microbial genetics, bacterial pathogenesis and much more. Students taking Microbiology and Immunology also have the opportunity to participate in work terms through the co-op education program.
Sample courses:
  • Virology
  • Immunology
  • Food Microbiology
