Our low-residency MFA program is structured around three consecutive four-week summer intensive residencies on campus in Vancouver during the month of July, with innovative and interactive online coursework in between. The program is designed for established professionals whose practical circumstances make re-location to Vancouver, or the resident program schedule, unmanageable. The low res platform allows more flexibility in managing a school/work balance. Throughout the degree, the emphasis is on iteration and critique, with input throughout from a range of faculty and contemporary art professionals.

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a specialized, accredited, public, post-secondary university. We offer undergraduate, graduate degrees, and applied research in the fields of art, design and media, as well as professional certificates, pre-university and continuing studies in these areas.

Our four-year undergraduate degrees, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Media Arts merge critical theory with studio practice.

Education

Emily Carr is dedicated to fostering an educational environment that is professional, practice-oriented and at the same time, rooted in history and critical theory. We encourage students to develop new and innovative ways of thinking and creating. Our curriculum is flexible, personal, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students. Students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits, internships and an exchange program that currently features membership with 75 art and design schools in Canada, the US, Mexico, and Europe. Our faculty are practicing artists, designers and scholars who encourage research and experimentation within every artistic medium and every field. Our facilities and resources support student learning and academic programs.

Experience

Earning a degree at Emily Carr involves more than just learning a body of information or a set of skills -- graduates leave with critical thinking skills and professional values that they will use in life and in the pursuit of new knowledge throughout their careers.

Emily Carr provides a unique learning environment with a diverse faculty and student body. We welcome students from around the globe, and in recent years, have hosted international students from over 50 countries.

Emily Carr offers you the highest calibre of interdisciplinary faculty and progressive research opportunities as the only Canadian institution solely dedicated to creativity. As a practicing artist and aspiring professional, the Master of Fine Arts degree (Resident and Low-Residency) or Master of Design degree will enhance your opportunities to contribute to contemporary creative society.

The Jake Kerr Faculty of Graduate Studies carefully selects a limited number of design, media and visual arts students to each program, emphasizing opportunities for synergy and collaboration among students, faculty and researcher labs/studios. The result is a dynamic program of study combining practical studio exploration in a professional context, including internship/independent study period, integrated written/visual thesis and a public exhibition.
