About Lankaran State University
Lankaran State University (LSU) is a public higher education institution established in 1992 in Lankaran, Azerbaijan. Over the past three decades, the University has evolved into a multidisciplinary institution recognised for its commitment to academic excellence, research, innovation and international engagement.
Located in Lankaran, in the southern region of Azerbaijan, LSU benefits from one of the country's most distinctive natural environments. The region is characterised by the Caspian Sea coastline, dense forests, rivers, lakes, tea plantations and rich biodiversity, and is home to internationally recognised protected areas, including Hirkan National Park and Gizilaghaj National Park. This unique geographical setting provides an ideal environment for education, research and community engagement, particularly in the fields of environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, agriculture, climate resilience and ecotourism.
LSU offers undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes through six faculties and fourteen academic departments, covering a broad range of disciplines, including natural sciences, humanities, education, economics, engineering, agriculture, veterinary medicine and languages. The University currently educates more than 6,000 students and is supported by a qualified academic, administrative and technical community dedicated to teaching, research and public service.
Internationalisation is a key pillar of LSU's strategic development. The University maintains academic partnerships with more than 50 higher education institutions worldwide and actively participates in international initiatives, including Erasmus+, the Orhun Exchange Program of the Turkic Universities Union (TÜRKÜNİB), academic mobility schemes, collaborative research projects and double degree programmes. The University was placed in the 601–650 band in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026 and ranked 54th in the QS World University Rankings: Western Asia 2026. LSU has also been awarded a 3-Star rating in the QS Stars assessment. Furthermore, the University was ranked in the 1001–1500 band in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2026. In recognition of its commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility, LSU was also included in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, reflecting its achievements in sustainable campus management, environmental stewardship and institutional sustainability.
Research at LSU addresses both regional priorities and global challenges, with particular emphasis on sustainable development, environmental protection, agriculture, veterinary medicine, food security, education, digital transformation and social development. The University provides a modern learning and research environment supported by well-developed infrastructure. LSU's campus includes three academic buildings, specialised laboratories, an Agricultural Practice Centre, a Tourism Practice Centre, Food Safety and Food Technology Laboratories, and a modern Veterinary Clinic equipped with advanced diagnostic and clinical equipment that supports education, research and professional training. The University also maintains experimental agricultural fields, citrus orchards and tea plantations, where students gain practical field experience in agriculture and related disciplines. In addition, LSU operates the Seaside Hotel, which serves as a practical training facility for students studying tourism and hospitality, enabling them to develop professional skills in a real working environment. The campus also features language laboratories, an electronic library, conference halls, student dormitories, sports facilities and green recreational spaces that foster academic excellence and student well-being.
