The Ph.D. in Management program at Michigan State prepares students for careers in management scholarship at top research universities. The program allows students to pursue their unique interests through intensive research and close partnership with Broad’s world-renowned management faculty.

The doctorate in management program in the Eli Broad College of Business trains students to become leading scholars at the world’s top research universities. Our department has a long history of being highly productive at research and producing students who have had very successful academic careers in tenure-track positions at top research universities.

A major reason for the success of our students is that they become actively involved in research with our faculty. In terms of the number of publications in the best journals in management, our department has consistently ranked in the top 10 in the world on a per faculty basis. As a result of high faculty–student collaboration, it is not uncommon for our students to graduate with top tier publications and to get faculty positions at leading research universities. Our former students have earned national recognition for their contributions to the field. They have won career awards for their scientific contributions, served in editorial positions for the top journals in management, held positions as distinguished chairs, and become deans of business schools. In short, the doctoral program in management has had a long history of success, and the faculty value it as our flagship degree program.

Admission Requirements

Our admissions decisions are made after a consideration of all candidates who apply in a given year based upon (a) GMAT or GRE scores, (b) past GPA, (c) strength of letters of recommendation, (d) past experience in teaching and conducting research, (e) past work experience in business contexts and (f) quality of the personal essay by the applicant. Online or face-to-face interviews may also be requested in some cases, but not all.

We encourage international applications, although our experience has been that it helps a great deal if the student’s first experience in a U.S. educational institution is not at the doctoral level. International students without any former experience in U.S. institutions may be encouraged to first seek an MBA from Michigan State or some other school accredited by the AACSB, prior to seeking a Ph.D. in Management.
