Contemporary societies face unprecedented challenges – globalisation, conflict, climate change, violence, crime and the “great acceleration” of rapid technological change. At the same time, it is experiencing huge upsurges in cultural creativity in the media, arts, economic arrangements, new political alignments, new social movements and in technology. Sociology is the academic discipline charged with trying to make sense of these shifts in the world, and of the institutions such as the family, education, political structures, law, religion and the arts with which humans have attempted to structure their relationships as individuals and as collectives. Sociology, is as a result, one of the most exciting and revealing ways in which we can make sense of the world in which we live, the directions that it is taking as it changes around us, and how we might actively attempt to transform it in ways more compatible with creating more humane, fulfilling and socially just forms of social arrangements.

The B.A. (Hons.) in Sociology at JGU is designed to equip you with the tools and knowledge to be an effective actor in our rapidly changing world. It does so by exposing you to the means to analyse and explore that world (methodology), to debate the various ways in which society and culture has been understood and explained (theory), to understand the linkages between the many levels of society and culture which of necessity touch on the economic, political, psychological, ecological and environment, and on the workings of the human imagination in the arts and creative activities (holism), and to explore how the insights generated can be applied in the real world (policy).
