The Bachelor of Arts in Music Education program is based on the idea that the best way to prepare students to become great music teachers is to constantly place them in actual teaching settings alongside outstanding veteran music educators. The core of the music education major is a six-semester fieldwork-based course sequence taught by David Bresnahan, a 35-year veteran of the NH public schools. Students will have at least one teaching experience and one related music education lecture each week. This six-semester sequence will cover as wide a variety of music teaching situations as possible. SNHU has established partnerships with a variety of local school districts and outside music organizations that will allow for these constant hands-on experiences. The BA in Music Education is based on a cohort model in which only a small number of students is accepted into the program each year. This group of students will take all music and music education courses together as a group. This system results in a low student/teacher ratio, provides significant personal attention for each student, and creates a close, nurturing atmosphere among the students in each cohort. Internships & Outcomes This program is approved by the New Hampshire State Department of Education for Teacher Certification as leading to an initial teacher's license or endorsement in New Hampshire. Southern New Hampshire University cannot guarantee licensure, certification, endorsement, or salary benefits. Curriculum The BA in Music Education is structured in small student cohorts resulting in a low student-to-teacher ratio, significant personal attention for each student and a close, nurturing atmosphere. It's small enough to give you the personal attention you want, but still offers major ensembles and other opportunities you would expect to find in a much larger program. Our faculty aim to provide all students with the skills needed to achieve employment in the field of music education upon graduation. Successful completion of this degree can qualify you for K-12 certification. Succeed as a Music Education Major The music education major provides students with the necessary skills for a lifetime of continued learning and scholarship in music and other academic domains. Our faculty strives to develop the knowledge and skills students will need to engage with and navigate the challenges of a global society. The faculty believes that in order to become an effective music teacher one must become an excellent musician. Our music education program is based upon the idea that involving frequent student interaction with outstanding veteran educators, encompassing a variety of learning environments throughout the undergraduate preparation is the best way to prepare for a successful career in music education. As a private, nonprofit university, SNHU has one mission - to help you see yourself succeed. The benefits of earning your BA in Music Education at SNHU include: Supportive community. Join the SNHU campus community of students who are closely connected with faculty and staff dedicated to your success. Affordability. SNHU is one of the most affordable private, nonprofit universities in New Hampshire, and students with GPAs of 2.5 and higher could receive up to $18,000 in grants and scholarships. Innovative programs. Study abroad at little or no extra cost. Accessible faculty. Learn from highly credentialed faculty who are experts in their fields and interact with you in the classroom, dining hall, fitness center and the stands.
