About Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne

With 800 years of history and 50 years of excellence, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne is today the largest university of humanities and social sciences in France. Its motto is: Omnibus sapientia, unicuique excellentia - Knowledge for all, excellence for everyone. THREE MAIN AREAS OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

Arts and Humanities

This field includes the departments of history, geography, philosophy, art history and archaeology, and arts. Some of its courses are unique and exclusive in France (e.g. aesthetics and restoration of works of art). The research centres associated with these departments have an international audience, and some of its preparatory courses are among the most renowned in France.

Economics and Management

Economics, management, and mathematics and computer science form this second field. It is one of the largest French university centres of excellence, both in terms of the number of theses defended in the various disciplines offered and in terms of the numerous international partnerships established in the past few years.

Law and Political Science

This area brings together the departments of law (public law, private law, international, European and comparative law), political science, labour and social studies (economic and social administration and social law). The Sorbonne Law School gathers the university’s main courses and research teams in the field of law.

A RESEARCH-ORIENTED UNIVERSITY

Research at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne follows a centuries-old tradition of excellence while constantly evolving in its subjects and methods. The university’s 1,460 teachers/researchers are divided into 37 research teams, 24 of which are joint research units with the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and/or the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement). Over 250 PhD theses and Habilitations are defended every year in the university’s 10 doctoral schools and more than 200 conferences and symposiums are organised each year. Founded more than 50 years ago, the Éditions de la Sorbonne form a huge asset which includes nearly 1,000 titles in its catalogue, with 60 books and journals published each year.
