Our Midwifery students will commence a curriculum based on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2019) Standards for pre-registration Midwifery education. The 2021 curriculum continues to build on the University of Northampton’s innovative active blended learning approach and will centre on case-studies helping you to explore the importance of cultural competence, evidence-led practice and professional caring to ensure students can provide effective midwifery care.
Midwifery is a unique and rewarding career, that will allow you to be in the privileged position of working closely with pregnant persons, women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, promoting health and wellbeing.
Our midwifery degree is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and accredited by UNICEF.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

A Level
  • A maximum of 3 A Levels needed with minimum grades of BBC or above.
  • General Studies is not accepted.
  • One A Level must be in a science which includes biology, chemistry, physics, psychology or sociology.
  • The science A level needs to be achieved with a minimum B grade.
  • Please note that AS (A1) levels and extended projects will not contribute to tariff points.

Access Programmes
  • Access programmes must consist of a minimum of 60 credits in total (15 at Level 2 and 45 at Level 3).
  • Level 3 credits must be achieved at a minimum of 30 at Merit and 15 at Distinction achieved at level 3 in Science.
  • Access programme should have a relevant science or health focus.

BTEC Studies
  • The award of two Distinctions and one Merit (DDM) or higher must be achieved.
  • Awards must have a science focus, for example health and social care.
  • Distinctions achieved must have a science focus.

In addition:
  • You must have GCSEs that include Mathematics and English Language at grade C/4 or above or a recognised equivalent. It is not compulsory to have GCSE in Science if you have a Level 3 science qualification, but it is still desirable.
  • Some healthcare work experience is desirable.
  • Accreditation for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is not considered for applicants to the BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme.
  • Evidence of completion of at least 12 years of general school education or possession of a certificate attesting success in an examination of an equivalent level, for admission to a midwifery programme.

The University of Northampton’s undergraduate portfolio encompasses approximately 170 courses, including HNDs, foundation degrees, single honours degrees and the most popular – joint honours programs.
These range over a wide range of disciplines, including computing, games, visual and performance arts, engineering, fashion, journalism, media and performance, business, law, education, history, nursing and health-related disciplines, sport, psychology and criminology.

Tuition fees
Tuition fees are identical for all courses and are set at £12,500 per academic year in 2019-2020 – with just a few unavoidable exceptions: Nursing (£15,500), Occupational Therapy and Podiatry (£13,500 in both cases).

Tuition fees

The University of Northampton charges identical fees for all its postgraduate courses - £12,750 per year in 2019-2020 – with only one exception being the Master of Business Administration (MBA) which is £13,500.
