Yessenov University

Located on Kazakhstan’s Caspian Sea coast in Aktau, Sh. Yessenov Caspian University of Technology and Engineering (Yessenov University) is one of the country’s youngest and most dynamically modernising regional universities. The university follows a student-centred mission: to organise teaching, services, and campus life around the real needs of students and faculty, and to graduate professionals who can contribute directly to Mangystau’s development and to national priorities.

Yessenov University offers a wide portfolio of bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programmes across engineering and applied sciences, business, and the humanities. Its strengths reflect the Caspian region’s economy and labour market: oil and gas, geology, ecology and environmental management, energy and engineering disciplines, and maritime fields. At the same time, students can study accounting, finance, communications, management, international relations, tourism, and pedagogy—creating a balanced ecosystem where technical expertise is complemented by management and social-science capability. In its institutional reporting, the university notes a portfolio of 100+ academic programmes and a high share of internationally accredited offerings, alongside the launch of a new Faculty of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence to expand programmes in AI, data analytics and automation.

The academic environment is multilingual and internationally oriented. Degree tracks are delivered in Kazakh, Russian and English, and students can also build additional language competence alongside their main specialisation. Living in Aktau adds value: it is a compact coastal city with strong logistics links, a growing services sector, and an everyday environment that supports comfortable study and living for both local and international students.

Internationalisation is implemented through partnerships and mobility rather than only formal agreements. The university maintains collaboration links with institutions across Eurasia—including Azerbaijan Technical University, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Beykent University (Türkiye), and the University of Gabrovo (Bulgaria)—supporting academic exchange, joint events, and research cooperation that enrich curricula and widen research and internship opportunities.

A distinctive strength is Yessenov University’s Maritime Academy, positioned as a rare pathway in the region for careers connected to the Caspian’s maritime economy, port operations, and marine logistics. The university highlights that students can combine a civilian profession with military training through its military department model, forming graduates who can serve both civilian industries and national security needs.

Recent years have brought visible infrastructure and innovation upgrades. Yessenov Technopark is developing applied training and prototyping spaces that help students move from ideas to products, including FabLab digital manufacturing equipped with tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines. The university’s infrastructure plans describe major facilities being brought into operation in the 2024–2025 academic year, including the technopark complex and other student-focused amenities and learning spaces.

This transformation has gained national attention. In April 2025, Kazakhstan’s Head of State visited Yessenov University and was introduced to flagship facilities and projects, including FabLab, the 01Edu programming school, the Huawei ICT Academy, and the Kazakhstan-German Institute for Sustainable Engineering (KINI). The visit showcased the university’s strategy of linking education with modern equipment, digital skills, and industry-relevant training pathways.

Student success and employability are supported through career and advisory services. For example, the university organises meetings and guidance sessions for graduating students on employment placement and regulatory updates, reinforcing an institutional emphasis on practical transition from study to work.

Institutional recognition has also strengthened. Yessenov University reports that it entered the QS World University Rankings 2026 for the first time, placing in the 1201–1400 range—an important milestone for a young regional institution seeking greater international visibility and stronger global partnerships.

Yessenov University is growing as an international campus as well. Public profiles note that international students exceed 15% of enrolment and represent multiple countries; they are supported through accommodation and student services, including social and psychological support during their studies.
