The M.A. Spanish program is usually completed in one year of full-time study. MA students may specialize in one of two fields: Hispanic Linguistics; Hispanic Literatures and Cultures. The department does not allow direct entry to the PhD program with a BA, nor does it allow MA students to transfer to the PhD program before the coursework for the MA is completed. Applicants are advised to consult the admission requirements and application procedures for the M.A. program. Specialization requires that each student complete course work in accordance with distribution requirements that are defined in terms of the four areas of the department ’s graduate curriculum: 1. Medieval Spanish Literature and Culture (to 1500); 2. Early Modern Hispanic Literature and Culture (1500-1700); 3. Modern and Contemporary Hispanic Literature and Culture (1700-present); 4. Hispanic Linguistics.
