The healthcare industry is changing faster than ever before, with technology driving forward advances in science and healthcare and vice versa.

There is an increasing demand for advanced scientists and healthcare practitioners who are able to predict the future and lead the technology development needed for it.

Dr Salem Al Touby, Dean of the University of Nizwa’s Health Science College said: “We need stronger scientists and healthcare practitioners who are able to provide expertise for developing better technology for human use.

“At the University of Nizwa, we believe that a stronger science and healthcare education can help create better technology for the future.”

If you are looking to study a science and healthcare degree and help solve some of society’s most complex issues, Dr Al Touby talked to TopUniversities about why Nizwa is the perfect place to do it.

Study a career-focused degree

Across the world, the healthcare industry is facing a critical shortage in key healthcare professions such as pharmacy, nursing, and rehabilitation professionals.

The University of Nizwa (UoN) aims to help combat this shortage, with its highly specialised healthcare degrees. Each of the university’s science and healthcare degrees are career focused from the start, giving students the skills and knowledge to enter the job market directly after graduation.

“As the healthcare sector is evolving at a rapid pace, we make sure that our programmes are flexible in nature to meet this growth and development. We do this through up-to-date curricula revisions and introduction of the latest skills sets required for any health care career,” said Dr Al Touby.

The programmes’ curricula incorporate real case studies of local, regional and international trends and frequently invite global experts to speak about the different healthcare professions available to graduates.

The University of Nizwa takes advantage of its strong relationships with the Ministry of Health and other government, military, and private health care institutions, to help graduates secure roles in a variety of healthcare professions.

To build up students’ professional experience, each degree programme sets aside a semester to give students the opportunity to complete an internship of their choice. Once this is completed, students will sit an exam review module, followed by a professional exit exam. These tasks encompass both theory and simulation elements and encourage students to reflect on what they have learnt.

Benefit from state-of-the-art facilities

If you’re considering studying a science or healthcare-based degree and are looking for a study destination with excellent facilities, Oman contains some of the Middle East’s best facilities.

Oman has a one-of-a-kind Natural and Medical Sciences Research Centre that is well recognised for its breakthrough research and technology. It’s used as a resource to facilitate students’ training and professional development in science and healthcare.

Additionally, the University of Nizwa has specialised laboratories that enable students to gain practical experience which meets the demands of the job market. The university has strong industry links and utilises this to help students gain relevant industry experience.

Dr Al Touby said: “The UoN is attracting key scientists and researchers, collaborating with a vast number of international and national agencies, higher education institutions, and research centres.

“It’s providing a stronger platform for student exchange as well as knowledge, skills and research exchange while keeping the identity of its Omani culture and heritage roots.”

Nizwa’s rich cultural heritage will provide opportunities for learning and growth

Science and healthcare degree curricula should include a combination of science and art, explained Dr Al Touby, as life is a combination of both.

At the University of Nizwa, every healthcare degree is developed in accordance with international standards of healthcare education, which emphasise the importance of holistic and experiential learning. Students learn in a wide variety of ways, through theory courses, laboratory courses and clinical courses.

Living and studying a healthcare degree in Nizwa, or one of its surrounding cities such as Iski, Manah, Jabal Al Akhdar, Sumail, and Bahala allows for learning and growth, with positive impacts from cultural experiences.

“Studying a healthcare degree means interacting with the community. This interaction with people and culture helps students develop soft skills such as communication, as well as more technical professional skills such as catheterisation,” said Dr Al Touby.
