Environmental Science is the study of physical, chemical and biological components of the environment, and how they interact with one another. It is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field and NSU’s program allows students to explore their particular interests. Due to the flexible nature of the major, students can concentrate on the physical side of the environment (e.g., landscapes, climate, hydrology), on the biological side (e.g., plants, animals, conservation), or a balance of the two. All students will gain experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), a high-demand skill in most environmental jobs, and can earn a GIS certificate. Environmental science students are encouraged to explore their individual interests and to work closely with our professors on research projects. The modern equipment and facilities at Northern include state-of-the-art technology in our teaching and research laboratories. Field experience or independent research is a required component of the program and allows the student to gain additional job skills. Environmental Science students at NSU will be well-prepared for a number of careers ranging from government or industrial laboratories to conservation, or to further education in graduate school. In addition, NSU students benefit from small classes and personal attention from the well-qualified faculty in the Department of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Natural Sciences. The NSU Science Club meets regularly and promotes a variety of earth-friendly activities including recycling and roadside cleanup.
