The Theater major at Dartmouth College seeks to facilitate and integrate the creative, critical, and historical study of theater as a performing art. To that end, the major includes a range of interdisciplinary courses in theater studies (the history, criticism, and theory of theater and performance) as well as theater practice (acting, directing, design, dance, stage management, technical production, and playwriting). Majors may concentrate their studies in one area, such as acting, or pursue a multifaceted course of study in consultation with their major advisor. The mission of the Department of Theater is founded on three principles: Theater is a multidisciplinary form in which all of the arts and humanities intersect. The study of theater cultivates life skills in collaborative, creative, and critical thinking. The theory and practice of theater are inseparable and mutually beneficial. Our mission is to provide students with a distinguished, challenging and integrated course of study in the history, literature, theory and practice of theater, both in the classroom and in production. This course of study prepares the serious theater student for graduate study and/or a professional career. This mission is executed with the intention of instilling in our students a deep and lifelong appreciation for the theater, as theater professionals and audience members.

Students must have completed their secondary school education and have subsequently enrolled at a college or university and earned credit, in order to be considered for transfer admission. Students are admitted to the freshman class on the basis of strong academic performance in a rigorous course of college preparatory study, especially in the areas of math and science; The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of transfer applicants whose native language is not English and who have not been studying in an English-speaking country for two years or more. Students should have SAT or ACT Test for the admission.
