The Department of English offers two distinct programs to enhance the major. Creative Writing enables students to craft poetry, fiction, and memoir as they study the work of the masters, while Foreign Study allows students to pursue a traditional English literature curriculum in a culturally vibrant setting. The Creative Writing Concentration: The Creative Writing Programâ€™s sequential course of study and small workshops allow students to pursue and develop their craft from the introductory level to the advanced. The creative writing experience at Dartmouth combines intensive writing workshops with the study of literature from a writerâ€™s perspective. Foreign Study Program: The English Department operates two Foreign Study Programs (FSPs) open to all students enrolled at the college who satisfy the attendant prerequisites. Both English FSPs are offered in the Fall Term. Application forms for all FSPs and LSAs are available online through Off Campus Programs. Students enrolled on English FSPs enroll in English 90, 91, and 92. English 90 and 91 carry major and minor credit; English 92 does not satisfy distributive requirements but it does carry college course credit. No FSP course may be used to satisfy the Culminating Experience requirement in any major.

Students must have completed their secondary school education and have subsequently enrolled at a college or university and earned credit, in order to be considered for transfer admission. Students are admitted to the freshman class on the basis of strong academic performance in a rigorous course of college preparatory study, especially in the areas of math and science; The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of transfer applicants whose native language is not English and who have not been studying in an English-speaking country for two years or more. Students should have SAT or ACT Test for the admission.
