Mechatronics engineering is a growing field that combines mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. It’s used to design things like self-driving cars, autonomous robots in factories, surgical robots, 3D printers and smart-home appliances.

These machines can help build electronics, assist in surgery or support search-and-rescue teams during emergencies. As they begin to use artificial intelligence to take on more complex tasks, the design and function of the machines are becoming more advanced, too.

In the Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering program, you’ll learn how these areas work together to create advanced machines. You’ll also take part in practical projects such as building and programming robots, designing electronic circuits, working with sensors and controllers and testing real-world engineering systems in labs.

Labs and Facilities

In the Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering program, students gain experience with state-of-the-art facilities in mechanical, electronic and computer systems. You’ll have access to newly built, specialized facilities including mechatronic systems labs, and embedded systems labs equipped with advanced sensors, actuators and microcontrollers.

Co-op

Carleton offers students a paid Co-op option with work terms of 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 months.

Work Experience

Ottawa is home to one of Canada’s largest concentrations of government agencies and high-tech companies.

  Did you know?

Students will be close to the Kanata North technology park, and to Area X.O, a research and development complex in south Ottawa with test infrastructure for advanced communication systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles and Internet of Things (IoT).
