Tuition Fees at the World’s Top Universities

Tuition Fees at the World’s Top Universities

One thing that international students are often concerned about is how much tuition will cost at their chosen university. Tuition fees vary across schools and courses and largely depend on the country in which you choose to study (visit our country guides for details).

Below is an overview of current fees for domestic and international students at the 10 top universities in the QS World University Rankings® 2021 – including information about the financial aid available.

For the UK universities featured here, prices are given for several different subjects, to give an idea of the range. Most of the featured US universities charge a standard rate across the majority of subjects and for students of all nationalities. The list of the world’s top 10 universities also includes Switzerland’s ETH Zurich, where fees for most programs are lower than in the UK or US.

Ranked ninth in the world this year, the University of Chicago is a private research university which was founded in 1890 and teaches around 16,445 students.

Although it only offers need-blind admission (i.e. financial need will not impede any student’s chances of admission) to students from the US, the university pledges to meet the full demonstrated need of admitted students, with financial aid for international students in the form of grants or scholarships. You should apply for this aid during the admissions process.

All students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships, with no separate application required.

Ranked eighth in the world this year, Imperial College London charges undergraduate-level UK and EU students the full £9,250 in annual tuition fees, which will likely rise each year in line with inflation. The university has a specialized focus on medicine, STEM and FAME subjects, and this narrower subject range means less fluctuation in fees for international students, with the majority of undergraduate programs costing £31,750-33,000 (~US$40,180-41,760) per year.

For funding opportunities to study at Imperial College London, search for studentships, international scholarships and fellowships targeted at students within the STEM and FAME fields. Several businesses that work closely with Imperial College London sometimes sponsor particularly high-achieving students, so it’s worth doing some research.

Some international scholarships offered exclusively to women in male-dominated industries (including many of the subjects in which Imperial College specializes) are available here. For general scholarships to study in the UK, visit our listing here.

Although financial support for international students to study at the UK’s top universities is limited and highly competitive, there are a number of funds and international scholarships offered via the UK government, international organizations and sometimes opportunities to gain funding from your home government, depending on your country of origin. To find out more, visit our list of international scholarships to study in the UK.

The University of Cambridge’s website also provides information about funding options for both undergraduate and graduate studies.

Located in Switzerland, ETH Zurich specializes in engineering and the natural sciences, and is the only university in continental Europe to be ranked within the top 10 of the QS World University Rankings® 2021. It’s by far the most affordable option among the universities on this list, with international students paying the same as home students.

PhDs students earn a salary which starts at CHF 47,040 (~US$48,777) in the first year, and pay a flat-rate tuition fee of CHF 1,350 (~US$1400) after registering for their doctoral exam. Other than this, PhD students also pay only a mandatory fee of CHF 37 (~US$38) per semester, to cover the costs of the ASVZ and the Scholarship Fund.

Hello Madame, My son will graduate from High Scholl in the summer 2021, and have strong desire to pursue engineering degree at top rank university, particularly MIT as his dream. We are looking for financial aid information to support his study. Looking forward to receiving further information. Thanks and Regards,

Hi, Saefudin.
Fortunately for you and your family, the MIT is one of the five universities in the United States that is need-blind. This means the admissions team does not consider any financial factors during the application process, and they provide absolutely all the help you may need. If you make less than $90,000 a year, the Institute is completely free. It may sound too good to be true, and still sixty percent of all students receive aid, and almost all of them graduate debt free. I'll leave you with a link, so you can see for yourself: https://sfs.mit.edu/undergraduate-students/the-cost-of-attendance/making-mit-affordable/
Now, if you are looking for a scholarship, fastweb.com is a good place to start. Even QS itself offers them, but they only have one for undergraduates. Simply go to Menu>Apply>QS Scholarships, and look for the Undergraduate, which will provide ten thousand dollars to the winner; your son can participate by writing an essay about this year's topic.
I hope this was all helpful, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions. This is a great community and many people are happy to help.
Good luck!

ello, I'm from Algeria and I want to get a scholarship to study medicine in any country ... what shouil I do

I had graduated from my high school in iran and ive been accepted for the toppest university in iran and ive been studying industrial designing since then.
but i want to change my university to ETHZ.
but i dont know if i can afford the costs of living there.
does anyone know anything about student part time jobs in swiss?
thank you in advanced.

Hi Arvin, international students in Switzerland can work for up to 15 hours per week during their studies, and unlimited hours during semester breaks. As you're from outside the EU, you'll also need to wait six months (after the start of your course) before you can start work. You can read more about student jobs in Switzerland here

hello everyone,
i have done my hihg school study.now i have started bachelors in my own country pakistan.
but
i want to start my bachelor in europe kindly brief me how i can get admission??

Hi Muhammad, admission requirements and processes vary between study destinations - our country guides for Europe can help to get you started. Hope this helps!

Does it matter whether I go to a university in Canada or the US if I eventually want to work in the US as an Investment Banker? It would be much cheaper to go in Canada but I don't want to regret it later.

There is a slight oversight about ETH Zurich here.. You forgot to mention that, in addition to ridiculously low fees, PhD students are paid a minimum of 47000$ a year (and maximum 80000$) by the university.. So it is by far the utmost affordable university in this top 10, if not in the world. (source : ethz.ch/en/the-eth-zurich/welcome-center/employment-contract-and-salary/salary.html).
I'm really amused by people being in debt for 15-20 year just to get a degree from a top university they think they value (when it's just about marketing really), but if ETHZ was a bit more advertized, people could actually make money off their studies and get a "top 10" university degree (which is regarded as one of the most pretigious in europe along with Oxbridge, Imperial, TUM, Polytechnique, TU Delft..), which in my opinion is quite a big achievement when you're 25.
I hope that wasn't intentional in order to favour US/UK universities, which we know tend to be the new black these years. And that the fact that ETHZ broke into the top 10 is throwing discredit on them, since the pricetag of an US/UK education cannot be justified in any way anymore. You don't have to charge a lot to give a high quality education is what ETHZ is proving here. And about the swiss living costs, theey're high, but you could live with 9000£ a year = tuition fees in britain..
But for a journalistic related job, I truly hope you can be as honest as possible and correct this slight oversight.

Hi Guillaume. Thanks for your comments, and for sharing all of this information, which will certainly be useful for others! The list here is based on the QS World University Rankings, which considers a range of factors ( you can see the methodology here), but which doesn't assess universities based on cost. As you say, ETH Zurich certainly proves that it's possible to attend one of the very best universities in the world without building up a huge debt, and we hope this list will help raise awareness about that. We had unfortunately ommitted to mention the PhD salary, which we'll amend now.

Hi friends i wanna study software engineering in University of waterloo and need some guide about financial aid and student jobs

Thanks Laura for useful information. Please guide me about Top US Universities (Ranked among Top 50-60 Universities in world) charging less than 30,000 US $ Tuition fees). Thanks !

Hi Rupesh, take a look at our article How Much Does it Cost to Study in the US? at it gives a better look at average tuition fees across the country - not just the top-tier schools. The expense of study in the US means that financial aid is way more common than you might think - take a look at this article for some examples. There are also six top US universities offering need-blind admission (meaning that they admit you regardless of your financial situation) whith might be of interest to you.

To find out exact fees, you'll have to visit each school's official website, but it's likely that fees drop slightly the further down the QS World University Rankings you go.

Good luck! :) L
