75 Percent of Students Expect Lower Tuition Fees For Studying Online

75 Percent of Students Expect Lower Tuition Fees For Studying Online main image

75 percent of international students said tuition fees should be discounted if they have to study online because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prospective students overwhelmingly backed reducing tuition fees by at least 30 percent if traditional on-campus learning is still not possible when the next academic year starts.

The survey, conducted by QS, found that only nine percent of students were satisfied with tuition fees remaining at the same level in such circumstances.

Recently, current students have also said they believe their fees should be reduced or refunded, with Wharton MBA students signing a petition for lower fees and some US students going on strike to protest the cost of tuition.

This formidable backing for universities to act and lower fees has put many cash-strapped institutions in a difficult position, with Covid-19 already posing unprecedented challenges.

However, the positive news for institutions is that the global pandemic is yet to put students off applying to university, with nearly half of all respondents to the QS survey saying they still wished to start university this year - even if part of their studies had to occur online.

Clearly, those universities which are able to adapt and offer high-quality online services in the short-term - while addressing student concerns about value for money - will be well-placed to attract students from around the world.
