The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics is devoted to the study and development of mathematical disciplines especially oriented to the complex problems of modern society. A broad undergraduate curriculum emphasizes six branches of modern applied mathematics. Probability: the science of mathematical representation and modeling of uncertainty, Statistics: the science of extracting information from data, Discrete Mathematics: the science of finite structures, arrangements, and relations, Scientific Computation: the science of using computers to model complex systems, Operations Research/Optimization: the science of design, analysis, and improvement of actual operations and processes as well as determining best or optimal decisions, Financial Mathematics: the science of modeling and analysis of financial markets. The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics offers either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. An undergraduate student must meet the general requirements of the School of Engineering, as well as departmental requirements. The department also offers a minor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics for any students majoring in any department of the School of Engineering or the School of Arts and Sciences.
