The international Master’s program Geomaterials and Geochemistry is based on a successful Bachelor´s degree in geosciences with emphasizes on mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and crystallography. Excellent students holding a Bachelor’s degree in related fields such as the other Earth sciences, materials sciences, physics, or chemistry are also encouraged to apply to this Master´s program. During the four semesters, students will gain detailed knowledge of physical and chemical properties of materials. In specialized elective modules, students will receive training in both, in state-of-the-art analytical and experimental lab methods as well as in field-based methods. The program allows students to explore challenging scientific projects and to learn innovative approaches for solving problems in Earth and materials sciences. Various practical laboratory and field courses will provide students with an overall quantitative understanding in state-of-the-art analytical, numerical and experimental techniques that ideally prepare for a successful future career.

For admission, all applicants have to demonstrate their special qualifications for the Master’s program Geomaterials and geochemistry. The Master’s program is a specialized program based on a successful Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences, ideally with a course specialization in mineralogy and crystallography. Excellent students holding a Bachelor’s degree in related fields such as the other Earth sciences, materials sciences, physics, or chemistry are also encouraged to apply to this Master´s program. The program has four major subjects (materials science, crystallography, volcanology, geochemistry), which require strong background knowledge in the subjects mineralogy, petrology, volcanology, geochemistry, crystallography and materials sciences achieved during the previous B.Sc. program. Furthermore, strong fundamentals in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology as well as initial experience with analytical methods and material syntheses are recommended.

You can add a master's degree to your first undergraduate degree (e.g. bachelor's degree or State Examination) if you want to expand or specialize your knowledge.  An increasing number are now in English — from American History to Physics. A master's degree program at LMU usually takes two years and is made up of 120 ECTS points.

In addition to an undergraduate degree, further qualification requirements may be necessary, which are detailed in the examination regulations for each master's degree.
There are consecutive master's degree programs that build on knowledge from undergraduate studies in the same subject. In other master's degree programs, the requirements can be met with different academic degrees, because they require certain fundamentals that are not restricted to a single subject area. Weiterbildende Master (career-integrated master's degree programs) also require relevant professional experience. Students in these programs are usually required to pay additional tuition fees.
You can find information on individual degree programs in the LMU Degree Program Finder.
