As a Comparative Literature major, you focus on reading English translations of literatures originally written in other languages. You study these works in a comparative way, both cross-temporally and cross-regionally, giving you a broader cultural knowledge and important analytical skills. Finally, because you are reading works in translation, you also consider the art of translation and what it means to read a work of literature in a language other than its original one. All majors complete courses on the art and theory of translating literature and a seminar titled “Discourses in Comparative Literature,†which provides the theoretical foundation for the major .
