Psychology is the scientific discipline that seeks to describe and explain our thinking, emotions, and behavior. Psychology’s intellectual roots are in biology and philosophy, origins reflected in our curriculum. The psychology curriculum is designed to foster skills congruent with the liberal arts tradition: oral and written expression reflecting a critical consideration of the data, issues, and concepts gained in the classroom and through the reading of original sources. The general goal of the curriculum is for students to attain a better understanding of themselves and others, an understanding of the nature of psychological research, and an ability to apply research findings for solutions to theoretical and practical problems in the psychological realm. The psychology department has several other, less global objectives. We offer courses and a curriculum balanced between theory and application for the following purposes: 1 preparing students for graduate work in psychology and related fields. The B.S. degree provides a core of courses that satisfies the vast majority of graduate school entrance requirements in psychology. 2 Satisfying students who wish to work in applied areas with a bachelor’s degree. The B.S. degree includes applied courses and allows students latitude to design unique programs suited to special interests. 3 Providing nonmajors with sufficient resources to work in nonpsychological fields that require knowledge of human motivation, learning, attitudes, and behavior. Thus, business majors with an interest in management, sales, or advertising, or premedical Psychology is a scientific field that studies behavior, social interactions, and the human mind. Psychologists not only seek to understand and explain how people think, act, and feel but they also seek to apply this information to a variety of issues that impact our daily functioning (e.g. mental health, physical health, performance enhancement, work productivity, self-help, motivation). Our degree requires that students take a total of 50 credit hours (43 hours in psychology plus 7 hours in philosophy). We emphasize the American Psychological Association "scientist/practitioner" model so students are trained to think critically like a scientist but also apply our knowledge to a variety of issues. Our curriculum provides a firm foundation in critical thinking, research methods, statistics, and oral and written communication skills. Our smaller class sizes allow faculty to work more closely with each student as well as integrate more “hands onâ€, interactive experiences in our classes. In addition, our degree ensures that you will graduate having not only depth but breadth when it comes to your background knowledge in psychology.

The equivalent of a 3.0 high school grade point average is required for admission into Oklahoma City University's undergraduate programs. Other English Language Requirements: PTE 53, or completion of ELS level 112 is required for most programs.
