A new degree course to prepare the civil engineers of the future is going to start at the Politecnico di Torino.
At the end of this course you will become a civil and environmental engineer, a professional figure endowed with great versatility and interdisciplinarity, with specific knowledge and skills related to support the design, construction, management, control and maintenance/monitoring of constructions (civil and industrial buildings), major works (bridges, dams, tunnels), infrastructures (roads and transport, collection systems, distribution and disposal of water) and works, systems and plants in the field of engineering for the environment and territory. With regard to this last area, the course provides competences for the control of productive activities and environmental and territorial safety, in the realization and management of environmental recovery interventions, in the management of construction site activities, soil protection and territorial protection, in the realization of solid or liquid waste treatment and recovery plants, in the realization of solid urban or industrial waste dumps.
You will master the technical-scientific aspects related to human interaction with land, water, atmosphere and biosphere and collaborate in the design of processes and solutions for a sustainable human-environment relationship.
What will you learn?
The educational path is unique and lasts three years. A first year common to all the engineering disciplines, a second year with basic engineering disciplines, a third year with disciplines proper to the L7 degree class concerning both environmental engineering and the fundamental themes of sustainability, and civil engineering and the themes related to the design of structures and infrastructures. During the third year, the student may choose to pursue an internship in a company.
At the end of your study path, you will be expected to develop a final paper inclined with your vocation.
How will you learn it?
The Degree Course is the first of its kind in Italy and will be held entirely in English.
You will be trained by following an innovative teaching approach, based on "learning by doing" rather than on "studying how to do"; you will therefore be actively involved in lessons dedicated to practical exercises, projects, labs and field experiences, plus company internships.
You will be able to see and carry out directly tests and measurements with scientific and professional instrumentation participating in the civil engineering laboratory course, a key feature of Politecnico di Torino, the only one in Italy to offer this kind of course from the first year.
All labs will allow you, for both individual courses and thesis/extracurricular activities, to put into practice the theoretical concepts explained in class.
You will have the opportunity to carry out an internship in Italy or abroad within public or private institutions such as professional engineering and architecture firms, design and construction companies, public administrations, transport concession companies or other utilities, universities and research centers.
You will also have the opportunity to join one of the student teams to strengthen your multidisciplinary and transversal skills: three of them are related to issues related to environmental engineering.
You will also apply the knowledge acquired through guided exercises and simple projects, which require the use of models and methodologies described in the lectures.
What you can do next
The three-year educational path is structured in order to provide the methodological and operational tools necessary
either to continue studies with the Master's Degree Course in Civil Engineering, in Engineering for the Environment and the Territory, Georesources and Geoenergy Engineering or in Construction Engineering,
or for a direct entry into the world of work, as an employee of companies and public bodies or as a freelancer with support functions to the activities mentioned above.
