Environmental studies are an interdisciplinary major housed in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts. The major focuses on how the environment is defined and understood from the perspectives of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Students learn to evaluate and respond comprehensively to environmental issues. Students are provided with the skills to analyze and think critically about environmental problems and solutions from a broad range of perspectives. This major emphasizes “lateral rigor” across the disciplines, instead of “vertical rigor” within a single discipline. SU’s exciting Environmental Studies department integrates courses in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to give students the tools they need to examine complex environmental issues in depth and assess them from a variety of perspectives. The program combines a solid academic foundation with extensive experiential learning opportunities: frequent opportunities for research and community engagement provide ENVR graduates with a substantial foundation for further graduate study or meaningful careers in environmental fields. The Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies requires a minimum of 120 credit hours of which 14 courses are requirements for the major. At least 30 of the 120 credits must be 300-400 level courses completed with grades of C or better. Students must also complete a minor in an area other than environmental studies. Courses taken to satisfy requirements for the major and the minor must be completed with a grade of C or better.
