SMA - Statistical Methods and Applications - is the acronym of the brand-new two-year Master of Science (corresponding to the Italian Laurea Magistrale degree) entirely taught in English and delivered by the Department of Statistical Science (DSS). DSS is the largest Department of Statistics in Italy and its faculty members enjoy international reputation in teaching and research. DSS hosts one of the most powerful computing resources at Sapienza University of Rome. The Master programme is entirely held in English. It provides students with specific statistical skills through a suitable mix of advanced data modelling methodologies and hand-on professional training to address complex scientific and socio-economic problems.

About University

The Department of Classics was created in 2010, bringing together archaeological, historical, philological, literary, epigraphic and linguistic disciplines related to antiquity, which had previously been hosted in a range of different departments. As a result of this, the department both promotes and supports constant interaction between the disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches to antiquity.

With some 70 faculty members, we are one of the largest and most preeminent institutions in the field. We carry out research in all disciplines related to the ancient world, from the Prehistory to the Middle Ages, in Europe, Africa and in the Near and Middle East.

The Department is organised into three Sections: Archaeology, Greek and Latin Philology and History, Epigraphy and Topography (East and Ancient Mediterranean). It also boasts eight laboratories, a rich research library, with more than 150,000 volumes, divided into four main thematic areas (Archaeology, Classical and Byzantine Philology, Prehistoric Archaeology, Ancient History and Topography), and four museums (Museo dell’Arte Classica, Museo delle Origini, Museo del Vicino Oriente, Museo delle Antichità Etrusche e Italiche), which form part of the Polo Museale Sapienza.

The Department offers:

• two BA courses in Italian: Archaeological Science and Classics;

• two MA courses in Italian: Archaeology; Philology, Literature and History of the Ancient World;

• one BA course in English: Classics;

• one MA course in English: Classical Archaeology (distance learning course, in collaboration with Unitelma Sapienza);

• two PhD courses: in Archaeology and in Philology and History of the ancient world;

• the School of Specialization in Archaeology;

• Master of Architecture for Archaeology (in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture).
