In this flexible degree, you'll explore art and literature from a wide range of perspectives.

  • Gain transferrable skills – on this course, you’ll learn how to combine visual and textual analysis.
  • Take advantage of the wide-ranging expertise within our academic community and explore the study of art, comics, film, marketing, music, social media, textual production, theatre, TV and video games.
  • Make use of our internationally renowned Shakespeare Institute, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, collaborate with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and take part in fun and interactive study trips.
  • Explore a city brimming with culture – Birmingham hosts many art venues and cultural festivals. You’ll find a thriving arts scene related to historic and contemporary art, at venues including Ikon Gallery and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which houses the largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite artworks in the world.

The Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies is based in the internationally renowned on-campus art gallery, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, home to masterpieces by Monet, Picasso, Kollwitz, and Van Gogh.

At the University and across Birmingham, you’ll have access to globally significant art collections and institutions — from historic to contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and manuscripts, including the world’s most extensive collection of Pre-Raphaelite art at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

The galleries of the Barber Institute are currently closed due to essential building works. Teaching will recommence in the galleries from autumn 2027. Until then, we will maintain the object-focused learning that sits at the heart of our programmes by immersing students in the rich collections elsewhere in the university and across the city.
