Dive into the histories and artworks of cultures past and present, across a range of global contexts.

With a degree in History and History of Art, you'll gain the practical and theoretical skills you need to launch your career in the arts, cultural and heritage sectors and beyond.

One of the most unique modules was Art History in the Field - we looked at Parisian art and architecture, and the module involved a week-long trip to Paris so we could go and study the art in person!

Gain the skills to analyse your favourite artworks (and discover new favourites!) in their original historical contexts. In this flexible degree, you'll pursue your interests in History and Art History as you develop the ability to research, analyse and interpret complex information. Central to your learning will be access to original artworks, texts and archives.

  • Attend seminars and events at our art gallery on campus which houses works by famous artists such as; Van Gogh, Monet, Turner, Magritte and Kollwitz.
  • Get practical arts experience with our Inside the Gallery and Professional Skills modules - learn how to curate an exhibition and engage with Birmingham city's lively scene bursting with artistic venues and opportunities.
  • Get involved with our active Art History community – gain publishing and editorial experience on our department’s blog, The Golovine, and enhance your student experience by joining our dedicated student History of Art Society or get creative and join the Art Society.
  • Develop your interest in two complementary areas and gain key transferable skills including textual and visual analysis.
  • Explore how the past informs the present and gain a global historical understanding from the Middle Ages to the present.
The Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies is based in the internationally renowned on-campus art gallery, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, home to masterpieces by Monet, Picasso, Kollwitz, and Van Gogh.

At the University and across Birmingham, you’ll have access to globally significant art collections and institutions — from historic to contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and manuscripts, including the world’s most extensive collection of Pre-Raphaelite art at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

The galleries of the Barber Institute are currently closed due to essential building works. Teaching will recommence in the galleries from autumn 2027. Until then, we will maintain the object-focused learning that sits at the heart of our programmes by immersing students in the rich collections elsewhere in the university and across the city.
