This degree teaches core general skills such as writing, video editing, audio skills, camera skills, interviewing, news package production, court reporting, longer form programme making and website production. You will develop an understanding of media law and ethics, including defamation, copyright, legal constraints and media regulation. You will be expected to complete 15 days of industry placement as part of your course (alternative forms of industry engagement may be accepted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be under regular review). You will also participate in at least 15 days of ‘newsday’ production in years 2 and 3, closely mirroring practice within professional broadcast newsrooms. This may take place in a media production suite or virtually.
