The University of Palermo is situated in the city of Palermo – the capital city of Sicily which is located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. 

The southernmost region of Italy boasts seven world heritage sites: the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina, the stunning Aeolian Islands, the late-baroque cities of the Val di Noto, Syracuse and Pantalica, the Mount Etna volcano and the latest gem added was the Arab-Norman itinerary of Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù.

The main language of teaching at the University of Palermo is Italian, but there are a number of wholly or partly English-taught programs including (but not limited to), BSc (Honours) Nursing, BSc (Honours) Management Engineering, MS Business & Economic Sciences, MS Mediterranean Food Science and Technology, MS Neurosciences, MS Cooperation, Development and Migrations. MS Transnational German Studies is taught wholly in German.

Most of the University of Palermo’s departments are in the main campus in Viale delle Scienze: Architecture; Cultures and Societies; Physics and Chemistry; Engineering, Agricultural, Food and Forestry Sciences; Economic, Business and Statistical Sciences; Psychological, Pedagogical, Sport and Education Sciences; Biological, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies; Humanities.

At the University of Palermo approximately 2.78 percent of students are international, representing 88 nations; 1.41 percent of students are international with Italian citizenship.

The most popular extracurricular activities include:

•Visiting the city and surrounding areas – enjoying cultural and historical heritage

•Doing sport at the University Sport Center

•Enjoying events promoted by the student associations such as the Erasmus Student Network (ESN)

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the free time habits; online cooking classes, movie nights, contest on social network have become very popular activities.

Almost all students live off campus with approximately 20 percent rent a room or a flat close to campus. 

The admissions criteria are the same for domestic and international students, but international students will also need to provide:

•Declaration of Value

•Legalized translation of transcript records

Extra UE students who would like to study in Italy need to register via Unipa Student Portal (TUTORIAL) and the Universitaly Portal (TUTORIAL).

Prospective students hoping to undertake Italian-taught programs need B2 level Italian, and must be verified by UniPa: an online test is provided by the University of Palermo in order to verify Italian language proficiency.

Candidates choosing English taught programs are required to have at least B2 level English for a visa from the Italian Diplomatic Authority in their country.

The University of Palermo, alongside the regional government offer students a variety of financial aid, including scholarships, exemptions, fee reduction, and other forms of concession. International students can find out about scholarships here.

To promote Italian Higher Education, every year the Italian Government awards additional scholarships, including:

Foreign and Italian citizens living abroad

•Students with international protection

•The regional government offers accommodation services for short periods of time

According to Almalaurea statistics, 67.6 percent of students find a job in 4.5 months; 61.8 percent of graduates from the University of Palermo think their degree has been useful for their job role. See the data here

The university has the “Placement Office” which deals with job placement and relationships with companies; plans activities and events to help graduates enter the job market.
