The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 features 50 of the top higher education institutions to study dentistry

The QS Rankings by Subject are based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar). Top dentistry schools in the US and Canada  

Dentistry sees a much lower number of US schools featured than in other subjects in the rankings. There are a total of 16 dentistry schools in the US, including three in the global top 10.  

The US has five new entries this year and three of these feature in the worldwide top 50 for dentistry: Boston University (joint 32nd), University at Buffalo SUNY (47th) and Tufts University (joint 50th). 

Two Canadian schools are featured in the dentistry rankings. The University of British Columbia (36th), scores particularly highly for research citations per paper, and the University of Toronto (38th) earns an impressive score in the H-Index indicator.  

Top dentistry schools in Europe 

Europe is the most well-represented region in the dentistry top 50, with 23 schools.. There are 28 European dentistry schools in total and these universities make up half of the global top 10.  

There are four Swedish dentistry schools featured this year, all of which feature in the global top 50. University of Gothenburg moves up six places to take the title of the top dentistry school in the world in 2021. 

The UK has the highest number of dentistry schools in Europe with seven schools featured. Its highest ranked is King’s College London, falling to joint fifth from first place this year. There are several other impressive UK dentistry schools including UCL (University College London) in 12th, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in 14th and University of Birmingham in 20th.  

The Netherlands’ Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) also features in the global top 10 for dentistry this year, in joint third. Also in the Netherlands are Radboud University Nijmegen (joint 41st) and University of Groningen (joint 50th). 

Germany and Italy each have two entries this year, with Germany’s Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Italy’s Università di Bologna (UNIBO) tying at joint 39th position. SpainGreece and Belgium each have a single entry this year.  

Switzerland also performs well with three dentistry schools featuring and all placing in the global top 50. Norway and Greece each have one entry in the dentistry subject rankings this year, including Norway’s new entry, University of Oslo (45th). 

Top dentistry schools in Asia 

Eight Asian schools feature in the dentistry rankings, with their highest ranked school University of Hong Kong (HKU) rising one place this year to joint third globally.  

Japan’s Tokyo Medical and Dental University, also climbs one place to rank in joint third, achieving a perfect score for both academic reputation and employer reputation. 

Mainland China’s three dentistry schools include Wuhan University (27th), Peking University (joint 32nd) and new entry this year, Sichuan University (44th). 

South Korea’s two entries this year include Seoul National University (SNU) in 37th place, falling eight places in this year’s rankings and new entry, Yonsei University (51-60).  

Top dentistry schools in Australia and New Zealand 

There is only one Australian dentistry school featured in the subject rankings in 2021. The University of Adelaide  places in 34th, dropping six places this year. It earns its highest score in the research citations per paper indicator, reflecting the high quality of its research output. 

New Zealand also only features one university in the rankings this year for dentistry: University of Otago , falling 10 positions in this year’s ranking to 43rd. 

Top dentistry schools in Latin America  

Brazil is the only country in Latin America to be featured in the subject rankings for dentistry this year. Brazil has three dentistry schools featuring this year, all of which feature in the global top 50.  

Latin America’s highest-ranking school is Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in 13th place after rising five places this year. USP earns excellent scores in the H-Index indicator and the employer reputation indicators, with near-perfect scores for each.  

Also in Brazil, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) rises an impressive 15 places to joint 22nd, overtaking Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) which now sits in 26th.
