University of Debrecen

The top university in Hungary this year is the University of Debrecen – ranked joint 563rd in the world. One of Hungary’s five elite research universities, it’s home to over 27,000 students, over 5,000 of which are international students. 

The university is also ranked for several subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, including agriculture and forestry, medicine, biological sciences, mathematics, and chemistry.  

Eötvös Loránd University

The second-best university in Hungary, Eötvös Loránd University is comprised of eight faculties: Natural Sciences, Informatics, Law and Political Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Education and Psychology, Elementary and Nursery School Teacher Training and the Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Education. 

Its strong performance in the latest world ranking is helped in part by its strong score for employment outcomes, a measure of how well an institution prepares its graduates for the working world.  

University of Szeged

The University of Szeged is located in Szeged at the southern border of Hungary. It is said to be the safest city in Hungary and a popular university town in Europe. More than 80 full-time international degree programmes are offered in English across all study levels, with some programmes also offered in German and French. 

As with other Hungarian universities, its strengths lie in its international research network and its performance for sustainability according to the latest QS World University Rankings.  

Budapest University of Technology and Economics

Based in the Hungarian capital, Budapest University of Technology and Economics offers courses within the fields of technology, economics, business management and the sciences. 

Ranked 711-720 this year, the university also performs well for several subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject including mechanical engineering and mathematics.  

University of Pecs

The University of Pecs is the fifth best university in Hungary, having performed consistently in the QS World University Rankings for more than a decade. 

Its strong performance is helped by fantastic scores for international student diversity and international student ratio, demonstrating the rich, diverse student community you can expect to find upon your arrival.  

MATE Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences

MATE aims to be one of the leading agricultural universities in the region with a mission to embrace the increasing significance of agriculture and play a proactive role in its advancement.  

In the latest QS World University Rankings, it earns its highest scores for international research network, sustainability, and international student diversity.  

Széchenyi István University (University of Győr)

The second of three universities ranked 1001-1200, Széchenyi István University is located in the beautiful city of Győr, at the centre of Central Europe’s ‘golden triangle’, midway between the capitals of Hungary, Austria and Slovakia. 

The university offers more than 60 English-taught programmes at all academic levels, and is currently developing a state-of-the-art Science and Innovation Park. This site is set to be one of Hungary's most influential science, technology and business environments.  

Obuda University

Obuda University has risen up the ranking this year to within the world’s top 1,200 universities, thanks to strong performances for sustainability, international research network and international faculty ratio.  

More than 12,000 students enjoy a vibrant community life while they pursue their studies at the university, with teaching offered in the fields of engineering, informatics, science, economics, and teacher training.  

University of Miskolc

Ranked 1201-1400, the University of Miskolc is located in North Hungary, at the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, in the city of Miskolc. Study programmes are offered across all levels and most of the postgraduate courses in the fields of technical and social sciences and the humanities are offered in English. 

All new international students are offered on-campus dormitory accommodation and all students are offered the chance to actively take part in research projects, with scientific conferences regularly organised for the best-performing students.  

University of Pannonia

We end our analysis of the top universities in Hungary with the University of Pannonia, which is ranked among the top 1,400 in the latest QS World University Rankings. 

This university offers programmes in the main areas of engineering, economics, information technology, humanities and agricultural sciences. It’s an institution with a strong research focus, as shown by its strong score for international research network – one of the metrics used to compile the ranking.
