We’ve been responding to the needs of industry and producing skilled graduates for over 40 years. This programme will provide you with the expertise in advanced materials and engineering needed to design and innovative sustainable materials for today’s world.

Materials is a discipline which underpins global industry, with this area of engineering opening worldwide opportunities to a well-paid and rewarding career. From materials developed to work in harmony with the human body to increase the effectiveness of implants and replacement joints, to advances in surface engineering allowing for more fuel-efficient vehicle design. The list is endless and means that materials is an incredibly important and rewarding sector of engineering.

Our programmes have a long track record of delivering high-quality, research-led education, which will take you to the cutting edge of materials science. The development of new and improved materials is at the very heart of a range of technologies and this programme will give you the opportunity to explore and deepen your understanding of the scientific, engineering and design aspects of materials, their structure, properties, processing, in-service behaviour and environmental impact, at a more advanced level.

Bridging the gap between the physical sciences, you will gain an understanding into the atomic and molecular structures of materials to help understand their behaviour. You will also explore their applications to bring about improved performance or new products.

This master’s encompasses all aspects of materials: their selection, manufacture, testing, use and applications, as well as environmental impact both during production and at the end of life. You’ll be equipped with a core knowledge of materials science and engineering that can be applied to a range of materials-based careers, giving you flexibility within the job market.

On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the underlying principles and relationship between properties of materials and their composition and microstructure
  • the synthesis and production of materials and the relationship between this and their subsequent properties
  • the underpinning concepts and practical use of a range of characterisation techniques.
The specialist knowledge gained can be applied to a wide range of industrial sectors, including: aerospace, automotive, power generation and distribution, IT, manufacturing and consumer goods.

We offer a fantastic range of undergraduate courses as well as a comprehensive range of foundation courses and the International Foundation Programme.

Every undergraduate course has the option to undertake a placement year, which involves a year working in industry either in the UK or overseas. Some courses also offer the option to study abroad at an overseas university.

There are various Bachelor’s degrees available depending on your chosen course, including:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng)
  • Bachelor of Architecture (BArch)
  • Master’s in Science (MSci)
  • Master’s in Engineering (MEng)
  • Master’s in Chemistry (MChem)
  • Master’s in Planning (MPlan)

For more information on all our courses and the opportunities associated with them, visit our undergraduate study pages.

We offer a range of postgraduate qualifications at our Loughborough and London campuses, including taught master’s programmes and doctoral qualifications.

Taught programmes:

Our taught programmes include postgraduate certificates (PGCert) worth 120 credits, postgraduate diplomas (PGDip) worth 150 credits and 180 credit master’s degrees, such as MSc, MA and MBA qualifications where you will complete a final research or a work-based project.

Research programmes:

We offer a wide range of doctoral qualifications across our schools, departments and institutes. These include:

  • PhD
  • EngD
  • PhD by Practice
  • PhD in Creative Writing

A PhD or EngD is the highest academic qualification that you can achieve. Your research must make a significant, original contribution to new knowledge, building on your critical appreciation of existing knowledge of the subject.
