The Low Energy Building Services Engineering MSc provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of low energy building, digital twins, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and building services design. This enables graduates to contribute to the future of low energy solutions and artificial intelligence in the built environment.

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering has an international reputation, close links with industry and UK professional organisations, and has delivered programmes in building services engineering for over 40 years.

The School's close links with industry worldwide allow us to help you secure a placement that suits your needs and career prospects. Several graduates from this programme have been fully sponsored to carry out PhD research placements by our industry partners such as Tata Steel, Vexo International, Cundall and Mitsubishi Electric.

Our staff are heavily involved with CIBSE and ASHRAE, and Professor Mahroo Eftekhari, Programme Director of Low Energy Building Services Engineering MSc, who is a fellow of CIBSE was elected as the Regional Vice-Chair for Chapter Technology Transfer Committee for ASHRAE region XIV (2020-2023) and the president of UK ASHRAE Midlands Chapter (2019 – July 2021) with Loughborough University as the headquarters. The coursework on two modules of this programme is based on the ASHRAE Integrated Sustainable Building Design (ISBD) brief, allowing our students to be entered in the competition. We won the ASHRAE ISBD competition in 2019, 2020 and our graduates have also won the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year in 2014 and 2017.

This degree counts as part of a CEng qualification and is a fast-track approach for becoming a Chartered Engineer. It will develop your understanding of:

  • human thermal comfort and the need for indoor air quality
  • the principles of low energy building design
  • the design of building air conditioning system
  • the buildings energy supply systems, including electrical and district energy systems
  • the control of low energy buildings
  • the theory and use of computer modelling and simulation in predicting building performance
  • the capture of design knowledge using 3D building information modelling
  • research methods and data analysis.
