Cost of Living
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, offers M.Tech programmes through its Postgraduate (PG) Centres located at Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, and Muddenahalli. These campuses provide quality education with well-established academic infrastructure, libraries, laboratories, hostels, and student support services. The overall cost of pursuing an M.Tech programme at any of the VTU PG Centres is affordable when compared to many other technical institutions, making it an attractive choice for students from across the country.
The primary expenditure for every student is the admission fee, which includes tuition fee and other University-approved charges applicable at the time of admission (As of 2025-26, it is around 38960/- for PG First year and Rs. 30085/- for PG Second Year). The fee structure is prescribed by the Government of Karnataka and VTU and may vary slightly depending on the admission quota and category. Every student admitted to the M.Tech programme is required to pay the prescribed admission fee at the beginning of the academic year.
Students who are local residents or whose homes are within commuting distance of the respective PG Centre may choose to attend classes as day scholars. Such students are generally required to pay only the prescribed admission and University fees and therefore incur considerably lower living expenses, as they do not require hostel accommodation or mess facilities.
For students coming from other districts or states, hostel accommodation is available at the VTU PG Centres, subject to availability. Hostel fees are charged separately and generally include room rent, hostel maintenance, and refundable caution deposits wherever applicable. Students residing in the hostel are also required to pay mess charges, which cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, and other dining services. Hostel and mess facilities provide a safe, convenient, and economical residential environment, enabling students to focus on their academic and research activities.
Students who prefer not to stay in the University hostel have the flexibility to opt for private accommodation, such as paying guest (PG) facilities, rented rooms, shared apartments, or independent houses available near the campuses. The availability and cost of such accommodation vary depending on the city, locality, room type, and amenities provided. Students may choose accommodation that best suits their personal preferences and budget. Living off-campus also allows students greater flexibility while continuing to access the academic facilities available at the University.
Apart from admission and accommodation expenses, students should plan for University examination fees, which are payable during each semester as per the prevailing VTU regulations. These fees cover semester-end examinations and other examination-related services. Students may also incur minor expenses for laboratory records, project work, printing, photocopying, internet usage, educational visits, and other academic requirements depending on their programme and research activities.
Students are encouraged to purchase essential books, stationery, drawing materials, calculators, and other learning resources whenever required. However, the need for purchasing textbooks is considerably reduced because each VTU PG Centre maintains a well-equipped library with an extensive collection of prescribed textbooks, reference books, national and international journals, e-books, dissertations, standards, and digital learning resources. Students can access these facilities throughout their course of study, thereby minimising their expenditure on academic materials.
The campuses at Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, and Muddenahalli are located in cities that offer a reasonable cost of living compared with many metropolitan areas. Students can manage their monthly expenses comfortably by choosing suitable accommodation, using University facilities, and utilising the library and other common resources provided on campus. Public transportation, affordable food outlets, banking facilities, healthcare services, and internet connectivity are also readily available near the PG Centres, contributing to a convenient student life.
Overall, the cost of pursuing an M.Tech programme at the VTU PG Centres is designed to remain affordable while providing access to quality education and modern academic facilities. Whether a student chooses to stay in the University hostel, arrange private accommodation, or commute from home, VTU offers the flexibility to accommodate different financial circumstances. By effectively utilising the University's libraries, laboratories, and student support services, M.Tech students can complete their postgraduate education with a manageable overall cost while benefiting from a conducive learning and research environment.
