The Directing Department has a strong faculty team with rich experience both in teaching and practical work. The Directing Department pays attention to training students’ practical ability, emphasizes practice as well as theory, and especially focuses on the exploration of students’ potential.
The Directing Department trains students to be professional directors for stage and screen, theatre teachers and researchers with fine artistic taste, and to have a knowledge of directing theory and practical principles.
The Directing Department provides directing programs at B. A., M. A. and PhD. levels and runs advanced learning courses from time to time.
The Directing Department takes part in international academic activities and so as to grasp the latest development of the discipline, enrich teaching content and improve teaching approaches, invites established directors, both from home and abroad, to teach in the Department. The Directing Department has emphasized practice since it was set up. In the 1980s alone, the Department staged nearly 100 plays, which attracted wide attention in China.
After more than 50 years of development, the Directing Department has cultivated many talented directors and actors, such as LI Baotian, BAO Guo’an, CAO Qijing, CHEN Xinyi, XIONG Yuanwei, ZHANG Ziyang, ZHA Mingzhe, WANG Xiaoying, WU Xiaojiang, LOU Naiming, GU Rong, XU Songzi, REN Ming, YAN Jiangang, LI Liuyi, ZHANG Yang, MENG Jinghui etc. Now they have become the backbone of China’s stage.
