The Department of Musical Theatre was developed from the Musical Theatre Group in the Acting Department. The teaching of theory and practice of musical theatre in the Academy started in 1992, with the intention of training musical theatre actors and actresses.

The Department of Musical Theatre boasts a strong faculty team which includes experienced professors as well as keen-minded younger teachers. Well-known overseas specialists are often brought in to augment faculty expertise. Many teachers have won awards at regional levels and prizes in various theatre festivals domestic and abroad.

SYLLABUS

Basic Vocal Studies, Techniques of Singing, Basic Speech Training, Voice Techniques, Fundamentals of Acting, Techniques of Acting, Fundamentals of Music, Score Reading, Solo Singing, Chorus, Basic Ballet Training, Basic Jazz Training, Tap Dance, Modern Dance, Appreciation of Musical Theatre, Musical Theatre Rehearsal, Basic Directing, Basic Makeup, and other compulsory courses.

For 20 years the Department of Musical Theatre has trained many outstanding musical-theatre actors and directors and produced musical performances, including West-side Story, Fame, Crazy For you, A Cat who Wants to be a Man, A Dream Awakened in the Dream, Tartuffe, and The Family. At present the Department has established a close and wide relationship with a number of famous musical theatre companies and teaching institutions. The establishment of the Department has set up a new base for musical theatre actor training, research and practice in China.
